Can compassion and accountability be mutually exclusive?

As a Conscious Leader, you would already know by now that it’s hard to keep a perfect balance between maintaining the image of being a thoughtful person while you lead and hold your team to high standards. This is a tricky one!

Showing compassion for your team and making sure that they get work done can be challenging. This is especially difficult now that we are facing hard times as seeing unfortunate circumstances come up that may get in the way of productivity is very common.

However, accountability and compassion can coexist. You may think that something’s got to give if you choose one or the other. But the perfect approach would be to combine both.

We’ve put together effective ways by which you can be a great leader that gets things done while you show your team that you have a heart that understands.

  • It’s all about the mindset. With the pandemic altering the normal flow of work, it is pointless to focus on the things that the team missed. Instead, put all your energy into the things that you can still accomplish.
  • What is your style in motivating your team? Many think that instilling fear will get people to produce more, however, research proves otherwise. Re-evaluate your strategy in motivating your employees, showing a little compassion will go a long way.
  • Be aware of other people’s reality. You may have survived the pandemic unscathed, but sadly, it’s not the same with other people. Acknowledge that some members of your team may be struggling with issues that need to be dealt with.
Everyone’s situation is unique. And even if you are killing it, and making your targets during the pandemic, doesn’t mean everyone else should be doing the same.
  • Promote resilience within the team. Highlight the progress that each team member is able to achieve and remind them of their WHYs – the purpose of their work, why they chose this journey, and what they are hoping to achieve.
  • Individualize career plans and one-on-ones with your team members. Get to the bottom of what would be effective for this particular person.
  • Consult with your team. Take the issues to the team and get their suggestions on how to increase productivity or what strategies can be employed to help the business thrive during the pandemic.
  • You are number one! Take care of yourself. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Make sure to sleep well, eat right, and get help if you feel you need support.
