For every pair of shoes purchased, TOMS donates a pair to a person in need. Additionally, the company has expanded its giving model to include eyewear and clean water initiatives. TOMS’ conscious leadership approach is deeply rooted in its mission of using business to improve lives. This unique giving model, coupled with their commitment to sustainable and responsible sourcing, has helped TOMS create a strong brand identity and attract socially conscious consumers.

Innocent Drinks: 

Innocent Drinks is a well-known smoothie and juice company that was founded in the UK in 1999. The founders, Richard Reed, Adam Balon, and Jon Wright, started the business from scratch and faced challenges along the way. However, their strong focus on conscious leadership values, such as sustainability and social responsibility, helped them grow their business into a successful brand. They use recycled materials for their packaging, support charitable causes, and have a transparent supply chain.

The Cheeky Panda:

The Cheeky Panda, a pioneer in the toilet paper industry, navigated its journey from an underdog to a champion through embracing conscious leadership. The founders, Chris Forbes and Julie Chen, established the company in 2016 with a vision of producing sustainable and hypoallergenic toilet paper made from bamboo. Despite initial scepticism due to their unconventional approach, they remained steadfast, portraying a clear and socially-responsible vision that set them apart from traditional industry competitors.

As conscious leaders, both Forbes and Chen prioritised open communication, transparency, and empathy within their organisation and towards their customers. They meticulously explained why bamboo, a fast-growing and pesticide-free plant, was an eco-friendlier alternative to regular trees. This educational approach helped their customers, employees, and partners understand their innovative direction and feel more connected to the brand.

Externally, they demonstrated their commitment to the environment by conducting rigorous research and securing esteemed sustainability certifications such as B Corp, Vegan Society, and FSC. These actions validated their eco-friendly claims, empowering them as a trusted and reliable brand in a market of increasingly environmentally conscious consumers. 

I was lucky enough to party to a wonderful online session earlier this year, where Julie and Chris were interviewed. They spoke with passion and conviction around how and why they created the business, their journey so far, the vision for the future and what their story and insights may mean for other leaders, businesses and brands.

Against the grain, their resilience and conscious leadership have led to a remarkable transformation from an unknown underdog to a champion.
